About Maria

Originally from the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, I live in Colorado, USA. I appreciate the apple orchard, nestled in the rolling hills I grew up by as much as the magnificent, snow-capped Rockies. Growing up in a Mennonite home with teachers and writers as parents, I was privileged to be in a storied house filled with the joys of reading and writing. I spent 10 years teaching young children of ages 3 to 5 while I continued my education, thus earning early childhood education degrees and a doctorate in child development.

Some 20 years later, I write while watching winter birds at an array of feeders or summer flower gardens I planted, in Colorado, where I live with my spouse, two children, and a flock of urban hens. My home is adjacent to the university, where I’m a professor, so I walk to my office through the campus Xeric demonstration garden.

Childhood

Pippi Longstockings was my favorite doll Mom made for me.

I read her books over and over since they were one of the few available with a strong girl character—literally and figuratively!

The set of Winnie-the-Pooh characters made by my mom are the ones I had in my pre-K classrooms.
